SDG 14 - LIFE BELOW WATER

The 14th Sustainable Development Goal is to protect and sustainably utilize marine resources for development. Global processes that keep the Earth habitable for humans are driven by the oceans of the world and their temperature, chemistry, currents, and life. The sea is ultimately responsible for providing and regulating all of human needs, including rainwater, drinking water, weather, climate, coastlines, much of our food, and even the oxygen in the air we breathe. They are especially important for residents of coastal communities, who made up 37% of the world’s population in 2010. Along with sustenance and revenue, the oceans benefit tourism and give livelihoods. In addition, they safeguard coastal areas from erosion and flooding by soaking up heat and carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. In reality, the world economy receives an estimated $28 trillion in ecosystem services annually from coastal and marine resources.
