The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a set of 17 global objectives established in 2015 as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. These SDGs have their origins in the United Nations series of global development goals known as the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), established in 2000. Building on the success and lessons learned from the MDGs, the SDGs were introduced in 2015 as the successor framework to guide global development efforts until 2030. The SDGs are designed to address a wide range of socioeconomic and political issues such as poverty alleviation, quality education, gender equality, affordable clean energy, sustainable cities, climate action, peace, justice, strong institutions, etc. In short, these goals are interconnected and integrated so as to promote comprehensive sustainable developments from local to global levels towards inclusive prosperity for all.
Higher education institutions (HEIs) have a unique role in advancing the SDGs. By aligning their activities, including curricula, research, partnerships, and campus operations, with the SDGs, they can actively contribute to addressing the global challenges outlined in the goals and preparing the next generation of leaders and change agents. Moreover, HEIs can shape the next generation by integrating the SDGs into their core mission, research, teaching, and community engagement. They can contribute significantly to the achievement of the SDGs by fostering knowledge, skills, and values that facilitate sustainable development.
