Farmers, barangay captains, agriculture technologists, and representatives from the Office of Municipal Environmental and Natural Resources Office (MENRO)—LGU and PLGU from across the province of Apayao explored together the potential uses of bamboo through a training workshop conducted by the Research, Development, and Special Project Unit of Apayao State College-Luna Campus held from July 31 to August 2.

Titled “Giant Bamboo for Sustainable Communities: A Training on Bamboo Cultivation, Product Development, and Resilience,” the workshop aimed to equip participants with essential knowledge and skills in bamboo cultivation. The training focused on promoting proper techniques and innovative uses of bamboo to strengthen its role in community sustainability.

The workshop featured expert speakers who covered a wide range of topics:

Dr. Maria Christina Z. Manicad delivered sessions on the Introduction to Bamboo, its importance in sustainable development, and techniques for seasoning and preserving bamboo post-harvest; Dr. Hannie T. Martin presented methods of bamboo propagation, including seeds, rhizomes, and tissue culture, as well as pest and disease management in bamboo cultivation; Dr. David A. Rodolfo focused on bamboo species identification and selection, sustainable harvesting practices, and bamboo-based agroforestry resilience; For. Olivia Tomas discussed the soil, climate, and water requirements for bamboo cultivation; Asso. Prof. Jonathan Bien Domingo provided training on file sharing; Mr. Ryan W. Gabit conducted a session on geo-tagging; Ms. Arianne A. San Mateo , and; Ms. Normalina Usita demonstrated good manufacturing practices, including food processing techniques for products like rabong shanghai, empanadita, and tortang rabong.

The practical sessions enabled the participants to apply the knowledge gained at the ASC-Payanan Site, where they explored the significant contributions of bamboo under the guidance of Dr. Rodolfo.

Dr. Mirasol L. Agpuldo, Director of Extension Services & KTM, and Dr. Ronald O. Ocampo, Vice President for Academics, Research & Development Services, acknowledged the active participation and cooperation of all attendees throughout the workshop.

The training workshop was facilitated by the RD & SP team led by Dr. Manicad, Director of Research, Development, and Special Projects, with support from Engr. Ma. Cristina C. Aguda, Mr. David V. Valenzuela, Mr. John Michael P. Doctolero, Ms. Ulenia A. Barinit, and Ms. Majeth Pescador.
