The Natural Textile Fiber Innovation Hub (NTFIH) at Apayao State College (ASC), led by the Research & Development and Special Projects (RD & SP) Unit, opened its doors for a benchmarking activity on July 17 and welcomed more than 50 guests from Aldersgate College Inc., LGU-Benito Soliven (Province of Isabela), and LGU-Quezon (Province of Nueva Vizcaya).
ASC Luna Campus officials warmly received the visiting team, which included LGU officials, instructors, and farmer representatives. After a brief orientation about the Province and the College, the guests toured the NTFIH at the ASC Payanan Site in San Gregorio, Luna where they observed the hub’s operations, particularly the extraction of natural fibers (pineapple leaves) to produce open fibers that are regularly delivered to the Regional Yarn Production and Innovation Center in Ilagan, Isabela.
The visiting team expressed a keen interest in establishing a similar textile innovation center in their respective domains that could empower communities by generating livelihood opportunities and optimizing agricultural waste. This initiative aligns with the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Textile Research Institute’s (DOST-PTRI) efforts to revitalize the local textile industry.
The visitors conveyed their deepest appreciation and gratitude to ASC President John N. Cabansag, College and Campus officials, and support staff, for the warm hospitality.
ASC officials in attendance included Ms. Evelyn P. Alvarez, Director of Student Affairs & Services (Luna); Prof. Maria Christina Z. Manicad, Director-RD & SP; Asso. Prof. Mirasol L. Agpuldo, Director-Extension Services; Dr. Philip L. Mandac, College Registrar / Director for International Affairs & Linkages; Asso. Prof. David A. Rodolfo, Pollution & Control Officer (Luna); and Asso. Prof. Hannie T. Martin, Director-Planning & MIS. Personnel from DOST-PTRI and the Provincial Science and Technology Office – Apayao also participated in the benchmarking activity.
