In celebration of mental and adolescent health, the Department of Health (DOH)–Apayao hosted a special event for students of Apayao State College (ASC)–Luna Campus at the EKB Auditorium on October 22.
In his message, ASC President Dr. John N. Cabansag emphasized the urgent need to support individuals facing mental health challenges, particularly during crises and emergencies. He noted that academic demands, social pressures, and future uncertainties continue to affect students’ mental wellness, underscoring the importance of self-care and resilience.
“As a higher education institution committed to holistic development, Apayao State College recognizes the vital role of promoting mental health awareness, reducing stigma, and expanding access to care,” Dr. Cabansag stated.
He also expressed appreciation to the DOH, partner agencies, and mental health advocates for their continued collaboration in strengthening ASC’s mental health programs.
Vice Governor Hon. Kyle Mariah Chelsea S. Bulut-Cunan encouraged participants to embrace inclusion and empathy, reminding everyone that genuine progress is possible only when no one suffers in silence.
Meanwhile, Provincial Health Officer Dr. Mark Joleen M. Calban highlighted that nurturing the mental well-being of the youth strengthens communities and safeguards the future, asserting that mental and adolescent health are lifelines everyone deserves to protect.
Representing Luna Mayor Hon. Januario S. Garde, Administrative Officer Jayheart Tumbaga underscored the importance of sustaining programs and services that make mental health support more accessible to the public.
Serving as resource speakers were Shane Gammod, Health Program Officer of DOH–CAR, who discussed adolescent mental health, and Dr. Roger Brazil, Public Health Unit Head of the Far North Luzon General Hospital and Training Center (FNLGHTC), who elaborated on adolescent health and development.
Also present at the event were Jeferson Tamondong, Health Promotion Unit Head of DOH–CHD CAR; Albert Sumadchat, Program Manager for Adolescent Health of DOH–CHD CAR; Charlyn Tagabing, Development Management Officer of DOH–Apayao; Jayjay Roaquin, Provincial Health Officer; Edgar Bangsil, Private Secretary; Dr. Ronald O. Ocampo, ASC Vice President for Academics, Research, Development, and Extension Services; ASC directors, program chairpersons, and staff from PHO and PDOHO.
As part of the celebration, the DOH–Apayao also hosted the “Dance Damin Competition: Indak ng Isip at Damdamin”, a creative showcase promoting mental health awareness through dance. The Salin Lahi Pamana Dance Troupe, composed of BPED students and coached by Instructors Judel Tabason and Mitzy Cayde, emerged as champions. The Sayaw Diwa Dance Troupe, under Instructors Edmar Acosta and Arlene Joy Llantada, claimed first runner-up, while the Golden Panthers Dance Troupe of BSBA students, mentored by Elmer Solis, earned second runner-up honors.
