ASC celebrates 27^th Charter Day

In a landmark celebration that embodies its storied legacy and forward-looking vision, Apayao State College (ASC) marked its 27th Charter Day.

Recognizing this year’s theme, “Stepping into the Future Towards Universityhood,” the College convened an assembly of Campus and College Officials, faculty and staff, guests, and students at ASC-Conner Campus on February 26-27.

Introduced by the College President Dr. John N. Cabansag, Atty. Septon A. Dela Cruz, CESO III Regional Director of Commission on Higher Education- Cordillera Administrative Region (CHED-CAR) graced the occasion as the Guest of Honor.

For his part, he posed this thought-provoking question in his opening message: “Why the need to become a university?”

“University is not just a title. It is a commitment to excellence. It promises to elevate the quality of education, research, and community service,” he remarked.

He also stressed that for ASC to achieve university status, it must meet higher standards across all key areas, including administration, faculty, and academic programs, underscoring that attaining this distinction would not only enhance ASC’s prestige but also strengthen its graduates’ qualifications, giving them a competitive edge in the workforce. Meanwhile, Dr. Ronald O. Ocampo, Vice President for Academics, Research Development, and Extension Services, reflected on ASC’s 27-year journey as a center of learning and progress, shaping young minds and driving development in the province.

Dr. Nobleza C. Sadao, College and Board Secretary, read Republic Act 8563 converting Apayao Institute of Science and Technology into the Apayao State College, authored by the late Cong. Elias K. Bulut, Sr. Additionally, Dr. Cabansag and Dr. Sadao acknowledged the contributions of retired and former Board of Trustees (BOT) members, namely Dr. Susan A. Sumbeling, NEDA-CAR Regional Director, and Rely Taan, Student Trustee, respectively.

Mayor Jorico F. Bayaua of the Municipality of Conner also graced the event and expressed his gratitude to ASC as a partner in shaping the future of yConnerians.

Recognizing the dedication of ASC’s personnel, CPA Jemmarie S. Kotoken, Vice President for Administration and Finance Services, presented service awards to deserving employees. Similarly, Asst. Professor Madelyne T. Maslang [AT2] , Director of Student Affairs and Services at the Conner Campus, honored outstanding students from both the Luna and Conner campuses who excelled in competitions within and beyond the institution.

The event also included several oath-taking ceremonies. HRMO Herminia L. Danao led the swearing-in of new appointees, Faculty Association Officers (Conner Campus), ASC Federated Faculty Association Officers, and Federated Student Supreme Council Officers, with Dr. Cabansag administering the oath.

In her closing remarks, VPAFS Kotoken highlighted the significance of the occasion, stating, “We gather not only to celebrate the history we have built together but also to look forward to the bright future that lies ahead.”

Moreover, a series of vibrant and meaningful activities were held on the 26^th to mark the occasion during its opening day with a thanksgiving mass, officiated by Rev. Fr. Teodorp Pic-it centered on gratitude and reflection.

Following the thanksgiving mass, the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony officially opened the Agri Trade Fair and Students’ Trade Fair, highlighting the creativity and entrepreneurial spirit of ASC students. This event was complemented by exciting performances, including:

The celebration continued with Laro ng Lahi, a traditional Filipino games competition that fostered camaraderie among students and employees through friendly rivalry.

As the sun settled, the celebration reached its pinnacle with a Solidarity/Fellowship Night for Employees, strengthening the sense of community among ASC’s dedicated workforce. It was a night of appreciation, entertainment, and shared aspirations for the future.
