The Commission on Higher Education celebrated its 30 the Anniversary and 4 the Higher Education Day this month of May. As part of the anniversary celebration, the CHED-CAR organized the Project Sagip – Scholars and Grant Beneficiaries Greening Initiatives Program. The Project SAGIP further responds to the Executive Order No. 26 Section 3.1. that states “All students, identified by the DepEd and CHED and all government employees shall be individually required to plant.” This program aimed to engage students and staff in environmental conservation efforts, specifically focusing on tree planting activities. The event took place along the riverbank of San Gregorio, as identified by Dr. Geronimo L. Digma, a BS in Agriculture Instructor, to mitigate flood risks and protect the surrounding land. The activity was attended by the officers from various departments of the college, including BSF, BSA, BSED, BPED, BSBA, BSHM, and BSABE. Employees present included Dr. Philip Constantine L. Mandac, College Registrar III/Scholarship Coordinator; Dr. Geronimo Digma, BSA Instructor; Mr. Ryan Gabit, BSF Instructor; Janice Ulita, Registrar Staff; Hydie M. Balbuena, SAS Staff; Dennis Dizon, IAL Staff; April Joy Agbucar and Jeffrey A. Acio, BSF Staff. The tree species chosen for planting were Malibato, Tindalo, and Narra. Malibato (Shorea polysperma) is known for its durable wood, often used for construction purposes, while Tindalo (Afzelia rhomboidea) is known for its dense and durable timber used in furniture making. Narra (Pterocarpus indicus) is a majestic hardwood tree known for its vibrant golden-yellow flowers and high-quality timber. This initiative is crucial in combating climate change and preserving our natural resources. As the saying goes, “In our efforts to save Mother Earth, a single act suffices: planting a tree.”
