The Commission on Elections (COMELEC)–Province of Apayao, in partnership with Apayao State College (ASC)–Luna, gathered students at EKB Auditorium on August 19 for Gen Z for Democracy: From Hashtag to Ballot, a youth-centered forum designed to promote informed and responsible electoral participation.
Fr. Ceasar F. de Guzman, SSC Adviser, opened the program by recognizing the transformative role of the youth in advancing democracy. “Today is not merely a program but a recognition of your vital role in strengthening democracy. Your voices and abilities can spark meaningful change in society. May hashtags not remain only on social media but be lived out, most especially through wise decisions at the ballot,” he said.
Election Officer Ma. Concepcion C. Hurtado underscored the program’s purpose, stressing that its goal was simple yet essential: to prepare young people to become knowledgeable, accountable, and empowered voters.
Delivering the keynote lecture on Gender and Development (GAD) and voter education, Atty. Mae Richelle B. Chaudhary, Provincial Election Supervisor highlighted the pivotal role of Gen Z in shaping the nation’s future. She reminded the students that their voices must resonate not only online but also at the ballots, where their choices can chart the direction of the country.
The event concluded with Dr. Rema Bascos-Ocampo, Campus Academic Dean highlighting that the youth must recognize their leadership not only as future nation-builders but as active contributors in the present.
