A delegation from the Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI) visited the Natural Textile Fiber Innovation Hub (NTFIH) at Apayao State College on July 16, marking a significant step in advancing the region’s textile industry.
The visit brought together government experts, academic leaders, and private sector representatives to evaluate the facility’s readiness for a major upgrade.
The inspection team included representatives from private sectors: Mr. Ajai Mishra, Head of R&D at Indonesia’s leading textile manufacturer PT Sri Rejeki Isman Tbk (Sritex), and Ms. Charmagne Kaye C. Diaz, CEO of CKDiaz Worldwide Enterprise, along with DOST-PTRI technical staff Engr. Karl Florante, Engr. AJ Argame, Engr. Dave Macabansag, and Mr. Alvin Ramil.
During the visit, the team conducted a thorough assessment of the current community-scale operations and explored plans for transitioning to pilot-scale production as part of the FRONTIER Project’s Regional Yarn Production and Innovation Center (RYPIC) initiative. The facility upgrade will enable 24-hour operations to meet RYPIC’s round-the-clock demand for 2,000 kg of open fiber daily, as emphasized by the center’s private sector operators—Mr. Ajai Mishra of Sritex and Ms. Charmagne Kaye C. Diaz of CKDiaz Worldwide Enterprise.
During technical discussions, the RYPIC management team stressed their continuous production requirements, with Mr. Mishra noting how the hub’s sustainable fiber output aligns with global eco-textile demands, while Ms. Diaz proposed collaborative ventures with local weaving communities to strengthen the supply chain for their non-stop operations.
The visit concluded with concrete next steps, including finalizing a phased upgrade plan that will begin with equipment procurement and facility expansion.
ASC Research Director Dr. Maria Christina Z. Manicad reaffirmed their institution’s commitment to the project, which promises to position Apayao as a leader in sustainable textile production while creating new opportunities for local communities.
In support of this upgrading, Dr. Manicad submitted a ₱35-million funding proposal to the Office of the Congresswoman, addressing current challenges such as chemical supply shortages while working toward establishing the region as a competitive player in the global textile market.
