LOOK | Faculty members undergo training workshop on HOTS
The faculty members of ASC-Luna Campus engaged in a two-day training workshop focused on the art of constructing test examination questions that measure higher-order thinking skills (HOTS). The workshop took place at the Conference Hall, RDE Building on September 5-6.
Dr. Rema Bascos-Ocampo, Academic Dean of the said campus, emphasized the significance of educators being able to craft questions that foster deeper learning and encourage meaningful application of knowledge among students. “This aligns with our mission to develop well-rounded graduates who are not just knowledgeable, but also capable of independent thinking and sound-making”, she said.
BSBA Associate Professor Mary Anne P. Umayam introduced the speaker. Asso. Prof. Raymond D. Garcia, Program Chair of the Bachelor of Secondary Education, served as the resource speaker. Throughout the workshop, he covered various pivotal topics:
Lecture 1: Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS)
Lecture 2: Bloom’s Taxonomy
Lecture 3: The Table of Specifications (TOS)
Lecture 4: The Principles of Test Construction
o Writing Multiple-Choice Test Questions
o Writing a True – False Questions
o Constructing a Matching Test Items
o Constructing an Essay Test Items
Moreover, participants were engaged in practical exercises following these sessions. They were tasked with creating a table of specifications based on the given data and preparing a multiple-choice test for any of the subjects they taught. For their last task, they endeavored to refine and enhance the provided questions in line with the principles of test construction.
Representatives from BSHM, BSBA, BSIT, BPEd, BSEd, and BSABE faculty shared their reflections on how the workshop would enhance their classroom practices, underscoring the value of continuous learning and the practical application of knowledge gained.
Assist. Prof. Catherine T. Bangayan, the Program Chair of BSHM, emphasized the importance of formulating examination questions that evaluate higher-order thinking Skills (HOTS) for fostering deep understanding, critical thinking, and problem-solving, discussing the significant impact of HOTS questions on students’ learning.
Likewise, Asso. Prof. Magilyn A. Racacho, mentioned that learning is a continuous process, emphasizing the learnings gained from an effective construction of test questions and understanding of when to employ TOS and rubrics.
In his inspirational message, ASC President John N. Cabansag shared his experiences during his early years in the teaching profession and took the challenges head-on as he rose from the ranks with sheer determination to learn innovative teaching methods.
