Over 30 postgraduate students of ASC Conner Campus gained fresh perspectives in conducting research mentored by the Collegesโ€™ equally competent resource speakers, Dr. Agustina G. Pattung and Dr. Jaybee O. Omaweng held at Kabugao National High School on October 28, 2023.

Spearheaded by the ASC Graduate School (GS) under the deanship of Dr. Nobleza C. Sadao, the extension activity forms part of the capacity-building program of the College to help strengthen the research capabilities of masterโ€™s and doctoral students.

In her welcome remarks, Dr. Sadao gave the rationale of the activity and mentioned conducting a second batch to accommodate more students in support of their professional development especially of their research capabilities.

Wresler C. Pascua, the President of the GS Student Organization (masterโ€™s program) also welcomed and acknowledged the participants who are elementary and secondary teachers, and introduced the resource persons.

The first speaker, Dr. Agustina Pattung, outlined her presentation the topics on introduction to research, the 2023 Basic Education Research Agenda (BERA) of the Department of Education, and the action research being the meat of her engaging discussion as she looked through the lens of the basic education curriculum. She emphasized the adoption of research themes that are listed under the BERA as teachers are enjoined to conduct individual or collaborative action research that provides interventions or solutions to commonly encountered problems in the classroom, thereby improving the teaching-learning process. Moreover, she underscored how plagiarism is identified and avoided to promote ethical writing and authorship.

Dr. Jaybee Omaweng, delved into the moral principles and values that guide researchers in conducting research such as voluntary participation of respondents or other sources of information, informed consent, anonymity, confidentiality, and plagiarism, and explained the serious consequences when ethical lapses occur.

A token and certificate of appreciation were given to the resource speakers followed by impressions of participants. In closing, Julius P. Sadag, the GS president of the PhD program expressed gratitude to the Graduate School on behalf of his colleagues and is optimistic of another similar extension activity to be undertaken.
