For the Department of Civil Engineering, intramurals have long been an event that they can’t whip. Civil engineering students have been putting in their best efforts for years, but it seems that other departments have always been stronger, and they consistently come in a runner-up place. But DOCE shocked the college with their ferocious and powerful resurgence after the pandemic.
The 126 CE students shouted “Aja DOCE, fighting” when they entered the Intramurals 2023 arena. As they compete in every sport and sociocultural competition, an inspiration would be the desire and the dream to bring the department to the spotlight. And it comes as the biggest surprise that DOCE wins, garnering twelve (12) golds.
Izee D. Macalingay, a first year BSCE student, dominates her competitors and wins the title of Ms. ASC – Conner 2023, and John Kenneth P. Llamelo, a third year BSCE student, got the honor of First Runner Up. Daisy Alberto, a second year BSCE student, overthrows other painters and topnotches the painting competition, and Jayvann Agguran, a third year BSCE student, who displays extraordinary talent in charcoal rendering, takes first prize. The women’s volleyball team also picked up three straight victories. All the civil engineering chess players, both women’s and men’s divisions, are able to advance to the finals, but Jyara Urmatam, a fourth year BSCE student, and Charles Suagen, a second year BSCE student, emerge as the champions. Whereas second year BSCE student Angelika Mae Pedroso gave the longest throws in both the javelin and the discus throw, enabling her to participate in the forthcoming dual meet. Jhonpaul Tacadena, a first year BSCE student, triumphs in the table tennis single men’s division, and Kimberly Laylay, a fourth year BSCE student, also takes home the table tennis single women’s division championship. Keeping their guard up, Jefferson Eglio, a first year BSCE student, and Christopher Jhon Binayug, a fourth year BSCE student, won the table tennis double men division. Moreover, Janine Tucpil, a BSCE first year student, outsmarts the badminton single women division bracket A. Ultimately, every tournament is competed regardless of the outcome, and this is the best tactic ever.
The journey to this sweet victory is not easy, so athletes have to stay and go home late just to practice and rehearse. But it wouldn’t have been possible without the steadfast assistance of the DOCE faculty, and the unconditional support of the DOCE students, who are so ecstatic to cheer the loudest for their bets. It is indeed a success shared by every Tim, Dick and Harry in the department. And this is just the beginning of more blooms.
