To advance gender inclusivity and equitable communication practices, non-teaching personnel from Apayao State College (ASC) and the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP)-Apayao participated in a training workshop on gender-sensitive communication. The training was held at EKB Auditorium, ASC-Luna Campus, on March 11.

Introduced by one of the members of GFPS Secretariat Committee and Administrative Officer Kathreeza C. Ganiban, Associate Professor Raymond D. Garcia and Associate Professor Annie A. Daet served as the resource speakers.

Assoc. Prof. Garcia focused on gender-fair language, discussing the definition of sexism in communication, its significance, and kinds of sexist language. Meanwhile, Assoc. Prof. Daet discussed the guidelines for non-sexist writing.

Participants completed a pre-test individually and in groups to identify and revise instances of sexist language in workplace communication, facilitating critical reflection on linguistic biases and adoption of gender-sensitive language in professional contexts.

Dr. Rey Carl V. Arimas, GAD Focal Person, underscored the significance of the training as an essential component of ongoing advocacy for gender equity. “Let this serve as an ongoing reminder of the importance of empowering each other and ensuring that gender-sensitive communication becomes an integral part of our daily advocacy efforts,” he said.

Meanwhile, HRMO III Herminia L. Danao shared the strategies for promoting gender-sensitive communication. These include using inclusive language, being mindful of visual materials, ensuring gender balance, challenging stereotypes, and adopting gender-neutral terms.
