HAARRDEC visits ASC, encourages more researches from faculty

      The Highland Agriculture and Aquatic Resources Research and Development Consortium (HAARRDEC) secretariat with its new management conducted a courtesy visit to Apayao State College (ASC)last February 1, 2017.

The said visit was headed by the newly installed Regional Research and Development Council (RRDC) chair and the newly elected Benguet State University President, Dr. Feliciano Calora, together with the Interim Consortium Director, Dr. Carlito P. Laurean who also just assumed his seat last September 2016.

ASC is one of the HAARRDEC member institutions in CAR who endeavor on advancing researches and innovations in line with agriculture and aquatic resources in the region.

Other institutions include all the CAR-SUCs and other regional and national line agencies in CAR such as the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), Department of Agriculture (DA), Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), Agricultural Training Institute (ATI), National Economic Development Authority (NEDA), Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR), WWRRC, Local Government Unit (LGU) of La Trinidad, PLGU of Mountain Province and Benguet Province as CREAMS.

"We encourage our faculty members to embark on more researches and extend them to our farmers and other business fellows in terms of capability building and technology transfer. It is our desire that sooner or later, our concerted efforts will translate into improved socio-economic status in our region," said Dr. Laurean in a radio interview.

Dr. Laurean, who is one of the longest serving members of the secretariat since 1978 and whose personal commitment in research is staunch, also reminded the faculty that being in the academe is not just merely about educating but also, as experts, becoming instruments of bringing about positive social change especially in terms of transforming economic conditions of the community people.

"We thank our partner agencies for the continuous support to the secretariat and we just pray for more," Laurean remarked.

Meanwhile, as an active member institution have consistently standing out in terms of poster and paper presentations during regional in-house reviews since 2013.

Recently in October 2015, out of 46 papers and posters presented by the other CAR-SUCs and evaluatedby HAARRDEC during the Regional Symposium Education and Socio-cultural Research Highlights held, ASC was recognized for winning the first and second best papers under education sector for the researches "Development, Validation and Summative Evaluation of Card Pairing Games for selected Topics in Math 8" and "Validating Teacher Education Achievement Test," respectively. Also, under poster presentation, ASC ranked second for the poster on "Indigenous Mathematical Concept-Isnag, Calanasan, Apayao.

Meanwhile, as a response of ASC's management to the continuing advocacies of RRDC, NEDA, CHED and HAARRDEC and other line agencies for research and extension, a four-storey Research and Development Building was built in ASC-Luna Campus to house the different programs of the college in terms of research, development and extension.

In addition, research centers duly approved by the ASC-Board of Trustees namely are now barely operationalized by the college.
